The Church of the Wisdom of God (St Sophia) is a remarkable building. It is in fact an Anglican church, but it was created in the style of a Roman basilica, and dedicated in 1892. For details of the church, its location and its worship, click here to visit the relevant page of the website of the Diocese of Southwark. This concert took place the week before the official Bank Holiday Weekend in celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee, so this was our second of (so far) three versions of the Crowning Glories programme: Songs of Royalty, Loyalty and London, in celebration of Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee. We were made very welcome by Brian and Robin, the Churchwardens, and by their colleagues in the audience; the atmosphere was lovely, and we all had a hugely enjoyable time. We were delighted to learn that just over £300 was raised by the concert for the Building Fund for renovation of this spectacular building, and for its sister church, St Andrews. As most of the cast had a long way to travel after the concert (Kingswood is rather a distance from Walthamstow, Berkshire, Dartford and Kentish Town!), we didn't have time to take the usual "after-show photo", but those below show us in rehearsal (click any one for the full-size photo). The first one is taken the week before the show, and the other two on the day itself in the church.
